More than 20,000 visitors attended the new Motorworld Classics event

in the historicBerlinMessefrom 8-11 October. With in excess of 700

vehicles–rangingfrom pre-warexotics to moremundaneyoungtimers–

lined up insidethe wonderfullyperiodexhibitioncentretherewas

somethingfor all tastes.On the Saturdayand Sunday,the spectaclewas

heightenedby some800 classicsgatheredin gloriousautumnsunshine

for a superboutdoordisplayof pre-1970vehicles.

Apopularexhibit featureddesignsfrom East andWest Germanyduring

the periodbetween the 1950sand 1990s,ahighlightof whichwas athree-

cylindertwo-strokeMelkusRS 1000–one of just 101 of theWartburg-

powered gullwingcoupésbuilt by the Dresdenfirm. Representingthe

West was the sublime–and farmorerecognisable–BMWM1.

Authenticallydressedbands

musicfrom the 1940s-’60s,whilea

sand sculptureof aTrabi provided

an eye-catchingcontrast to the
