WETESTTHE CLASSICSTHATYOU CANBUY
It’s time to re-evaluatethe GT4 becausethey’ve climbedso stronglyin the
past two years. Now £50kis the market for thesesharpBertone2+2s.
This one is straightand appearsrust free, but the paintlets it down a
little,beingmicroblisteredand with someminorbubblesat the frontedge
of the driver’s door. Moreseriously,thereare othersmallareasat both
bottomcornersof the ’screen.But the chassistubeslook solid,as do the
floors,and the sills are uncorroded,the flangesand jointsin goodrepair.
The bumpersare smart,the wheelswere refurbishedin 2012and the
exhaustis recent,with a stainlessfinisherplate.The suspensionrubbers
aren’tperished,the CVJ bootsare soundand tyresare half-worn, Michelin
XWXs on the frontand Fuldason the back,with an unusedspacesaver.
Inside,the carpets,dash and vinyl are nice.The seat centreswere
retrimmedin 2012whena new wheeland headliningwere also fitted.
This hidesa factorysunroof,whichpresumablyrendereditselfredundant.
The housingfor the pulls is broken, but we managedto get both lids
open.There’s no airbox; the motorwears gauzefiltersthoughthe original
intake throatsare in the boot.The oil is slightlyused,and just over ‘Max’.
The coolant,beneatha new cap, appearsrustyand colour-indeterminate,
but the plug leadsand coils are newish.The mostrecentcambeltchange
was duringa big £2881serviceat 54,786miles,threeyears ago.
It startseasily,and drives reallywell, feelinglike a crossbetween a
246 Dino and a Stratos.Initialrear wheelbearingand perhapsdriveshaft
noisequietenas it warms.Talking of which,the enginetemperaturerises
alarminglyto 100ºCbeforedroppingsuddenlywhenthe thermostat
opens,settlingat 80ºC.The oil pressureis a reliable5bar-plus.
The steeringis light with goodfeel, plus the brake pedalis firm – the
caliperswere new in 2013.For a Ferrari of a certainage, the electricsare
doingwell: the headlights,windows, aerialand eventhe clockall work, but
the fan switchis broken. It comeswith a handbookin the factoryleather
wallet,servicebook,a sheafof old bills and an MoTuntil 2 December.
