Federation update

Augustnow seemsa long time past, but I wanted
to sharemy impressionsof Monterey Car Week
in California.I was invitedto attendthe fixtures
as the delegatefor the FédérationInternationale
des VéhiculesAnciens,whichrepresentsowners
of historicmachinery. It is a spectaculararray of shows encompassing
The Quail,a MotorsportsGatheringand Rolex Monterey Motorsports
Reunionat LagunaSeca;and the PebbleBeachConcoursd’Elegance
(alreadyreportedin the Octoberissue).It’s muchmorethan that,though;
I counted20 events includingeight
auctions,somerunningover more
than one day and whichare quite
a spectaclein theirown right.
Carmel-by-the-Seafeatures
Concourson the Avenue(see last
month),but manypeoplestay in
the lovely town so it is a Mecca
for enthusiastsat any time of the
day or night.The HistoricVehicle
Association,our counterpartin the
US, drove a ModelTfrom Detroitto San Francisco, retracinga 3500-mile
trip madeby EdselFord a centuryago. They stoppedoff in Carmeland we
usedthe car as our runaboutover several days, whichwas very enjoyable.
Thereare lots of chancesto see classicson the road, notablythe Pebble
BeachTour d’Eleganceon the Thursday.The 80-mileroutetakes in parts
of 17-MileDrive, via pine and cypressforestsand past dramaticcliffs,
leadingto the beautifulcrescent-shapedbay. It’sdefinitelyworth avisit!
