This Minx,alate SeriesIIIC so it’s 1592ccinsteadof the previous1494cc,
had abare-metalrespray afew years back –presumablycarriedout
beforethe bumperrechroming,for whichthere’s a£500bill dated2013.
Lots of old MoTs confirmthe mileageand anotebookfrom its first owner
detailsevery pennyspenton the car, includingpetrol,until 1985.There
havebeen threekeeperssincethen, the most recentfrom 2005.
The doorshad new metalat their bottomsand there’s someplop in the
rear arches,but the structureseemssolid,the floorsand chassiscruciform
lookingstrong.The offsidedoor fit is alot betterthan the nearside,but
theyboth shut well. Judgingby the welding on their seams,the sills have
been replaced,and look abit belliedin the middlefrom someangles,but
theyall do that, Sir.There’s asmallding in the nearsidesill, and the spear
trim on the front wing that side is abit squashed,too, thoughthe rest of
the brightwork, includingthe delicatealuminiumgrille stamping,is good.
The seat vinyl is probablyoriginaland holdingup well, betterthan the
hood tonneau,but the hood is newish, as are the tyres,165-section
Elegantradials.There’s an old narrowercrossplyon the spare.The dash
is alittle scratchedand tired,thoughit’s all there,and the carpetswere
probablynew whenthe body and paintwork were done.The enginebay is
tidy, but the batteryis securedwith abungeecord.The heatertrunking
looksnew, whilethe oil is at mid level and coolantfull in the radiator.
It startseasilyon alittle chokeand it’s livelier than youmightexpect,
with decenttorque,but there’s aminorblow from the exhaust.There’s
no oil-pressuregaugeand it doesn’tget hot.The brakes pull up firmlyand
it’s asurpriseto find that they’re drumsall round.There’s no slop in the
steeringlinkage,whichis fluid but thereis aclonkfrom the offsidefront
corner, whichyoufeel throughthe wheel–confirmationof alittle play in
one kingpin,advisedon the latestMoT, whichruns until September2016.
