We have described the principal parts in a galvanic element (also known as the galvanic cell) which is a set-
up where chemical energy is transferred into electrical energy. The reaction in an electrochemical cell takes
place in the boundary between the electrode (the part that is dipped into the solution) and the solution itself.
The electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place is called the anode while the electrode where the
reduction takes place is called the cathode.
