for and to practice tolerance, one can choose to recognize and respect
the ‘otherness’ of the other and find ways to live and work together. One
sees examples of each of these alternatives being pursued by contempo-
rary leaders and groups around the world. But the leaders, who are able
to recognize otherness, find ways to live with diversity and to help their
followers embrace it, are leaders who are, among other things, adept
practitioners of the virtue of tolerance, which they also model for every-
one.
