3 Move and merge
Use the Move tool, with Auto Select Layer ticked in its Tool
Options, to drag the slices sideways until they spread across the
width of the image, and black bars show through. You can dispose
of any slices at the sides that don’t contain facial detail by deleting
the layers they are on. Hold Shift, and click all the slice layers to
select them all, then right-click and choose Merge Layers.
4 Blur
Hide the black layer, and duplicate the slices layer twice.
Hide one, and the original, and move the other so it’s just above
the plain black layer. With it selected, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian
blur and give it enough blur to be noticeable – 7.5 for us. You can
rename layers to keep track of them – double click a layer’s name
in the Layers palette, and give it a new one.
