7 Using AutoFormat
Click the ‘Choose commands from’ menu and select All
Commands. Select AutoFormat, and click the Add button and OK

  • the new button should now appear in the toolbar. To format a
document, click the button and, in the dialog that appears,
choose between simply applying the formatting you have
previously selected in settings, or reviewing each change.

8 Formatting pasted text
Automatic formatting can also be applied to pasted text.
When you paste some text from another document, a button will
appear to the lower right. Click this, and you can choose between
matching the formatting of the target document (Merge
Formatting), retaining the formatting of the source text (Keep
Source Formatting), or ignoring it completely (Keep Text Only). Q

AutoFormat options
In addition to AutoFormat As You Type, there is also an
AutoFormat tab. As you have probably guessed, these settings are
not applied to your documents as you type. Instead, you can use
the little-known AutoFormat button to quickly apply these
formatting options to a document. As before, use the checkboxes
to choose the AutoFormat options you’d like enabled.

3 AutoFormat as you type
Each of the six options listed here is fairly self-explanatory,
and you need simply tick the box next to those you would like
Word to take care of for you. It is worth noting, however, that even
if you leave an option enabled so Word changes, say, the 1st you
type into 1st, you can override changes on a case by case basis;
you just need to press Ctrl + Z (Undo) to reverse a change.

6
Accessing AutoFormat
The great thing about having both AutoFormat and
AutoFormat As You Type options is that you can have different
settings for each. You may opt to have AutoFormat As You Type
disabled, but use the AutoFormat button. To do this, you will need
to add the AutoFormat button to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click
the arrow to the right of this toolbar and select More Commands.

4 Apply as you type settings
As well as changing the appearance of text for you, Word
can also apply other formatting. If you start to type a numbered
list by typing 1., when you hit Enter, Word will automatically enter

  1. for you. This setting and others – including the formatting of
tables, borders and bulleted lists – can be found in the ‘Apply as
you type’ section of the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
