The Echo Dot is the cheapest Alexa device that doesn’t
need any other equipment to work – it’s got speakers,
microphone and wireless connectivity all in one small
puck. The full power of Alexa is here, so you can ask
your Echo Dot to control loads of the other devices
you’ll find in this guide, as well as being able to tell it to
play music from a host of streaming services, asking it
questions, and adding more using Alexa ‘Skills’ that youcan install. It has four far-field microphones that should
be able to pick up your voice from way across the room,
and filter out ambient noise. The sound quality from
such a small device obviously isn’t amazing, but it can
be connected to bigger speakers by cable or Bluetooth.
Don’t pay the RRP for one, though: it’s pretty regularly
down to roughly £35 in sales.
