Window Door Sensor

Door sensors are brilliant for ending the nagging
worries over whether you closed the bedroom
window or back door before you went out – and for
letting you know if anyone’s broken in (or, more
prosaically, just when your family’s coming and
going, if you want). There are lots of options on the
market, but most need a hub of some kind to
operate, which makes them more expensive to get
into. This doesn’t: the sensors have Wi-Fi built in, so
you just stick them on the door, use the app to get
them on your network, and they’re ready to go –
they’ll alert you with a notification if anything
happens, or you can check their status any time
from the app. It’s compatible with Alexa and Google
Assistant, as well as IFTTT, a service you can use to
make one smart home device trigger another, so
you could make it that your lights all come on if
a window is opened in the middle of the night.

Hive’s system requires an £80
hub, to which you can connect
multiple door/window sensors
(costing around £24 each in
practice, though RRP is £29), as
well as other useful smart home
tech, including Hive’s thermostat
and its motion sensors. It’s a lot
more outlay, but it lets you
create a whole security setup

that flows through one
convenient app – you can know
whether a door has opened, and
whether any motion was
detected in the hall following
that. Each sensor is a bit easier
to set up, because it flows
through a central hub – ideal for
an easy whole-house system.
