Security

Cat’s solution
It’s true: email messages
aren’t encrypted during
transit, and are passed
between multiple servers as they
journey from sender to recipient.
Beefing up security requires action
on both your part and your
recipients, however. You can add
encryption plugins for existing mail
providers and applications – for
example, Thunderbird users must
install GnuPG (https://gnupg.org/)
followed by the Enigmail add-on,
while Gmail users can examine the
FlowCrypt (https://flowcrypt.com/)
extension.
These options don’t encrypt your
mailbox, however – to fix that
requires switching to a new email
service. To examples are Protonmail
(https://protonmail.com/) and
Tutanota (https://tutanota.com/).
End-to-end encryption applies
when conversing with other users
of the same service, while emails
sent to other addresses are
protected by sending an invitation
message in their place: recipients
must click the link and enter a

password (share this separately) to
decrypt and read the message in
their web browser. Protonmail also
supports OpenPGP for those who
want to use that to communicate
directly with fellow OpenPGP users.

Microsoft Office
STOREMACROSOUTSIDE
OFDOCUMENTS
Q I’m a big fan of Office’s
time-saving macros –
particularly those I can copy and
paste as VBA code from reputable
online sources. For security reasons,
I’m happy that Word, PowerPoint
and so on don’t save them into
regular documents, but it can be
annoying having to recreate them
every time I need them. Can you
suggest a more elegant way of
keeping these macros on tap?
Nigel Mitchell

Ian’s solution
Word, Excel and
PowerPoint allow you to
apply macros in one
open document to any other. The
solution, therefore, is to take
advantage of Office’s support for
macro-enabled documents (.docm,
.xlsm and .pptm files respectively)

  • create a new blank document,
    switch to the ribbon’s Developer
tab to open Visual Basic, then
choose Insert > Module to create a
blank module into which you copy
and paste all the macro code you
    need. Close the Visual Basic
window, then save it as the relevant
    macro-enabled document.
    Simply open this document
whenever you want access to the
macros inside – you’ll be able to run
them in other documents via the
    Developer tab’s Macros button.

MACROS Store all
your Office macros
in a dedicated
document for
easy access.
