Summary of basic camera techniques


~ Select the focal point of the image and choose selective or overall focus.


~ Select the depth of fi eld required using the aperture control.


~ Consider the combined effects of:



  • aperture

  • focal length

  • distance from the subject


~ To maximize depth of fi eld focus one third of the way into the subject.


~ Use a depth of fi eld preview, a depth of fi eld scale or the camera’s LCD display to
calculate focus.


~ Consider the most appropriate choice of shutter speed to freeze or blur the subject.


~ Brace the camera when using slower shutter speeds to avoid camera shake.


~ Pan the camera to maximize sharpness of a moving subject.


~ Use predictive focus when panning a moving subject.


~ Allow for increased levels of noise with exposure times longer than one second.


~ Choose the desired perspective by considered use of focal length and viewpoint.
