Light
As previously stated in the chapter on light the use of low light is essential to increase the range of
moods. The changes in contrast, hue and color saturation found in low light conditions can all be
used to extend the expressive possibilities for the photographer.
Extreme brightness range
With an extreme brightness range the exposure between land and sky is often a compromise. Sky
may become overexposed when detail is required in the land, land may become underexposed
when detail is required in the sky. The brightness range can be controlled by fi ltration, shooting
at an appropriate time of day and by using the camera RAW format. It is also possible to bracket
exposures and merge the images in post-production (see Photoshop CS2: essential skills or
Digital Imaging: essential skills).
Note > It is recommended to capture in RAW mode to exploit the full dynamic range that
your image sensor is capable of as JPEG or TIFF processing in-camera may clip the shadow
and highlight detail.

Merge to HDR
New to Photoshop CS2 is the merge to HDR (High Dynamic Range) automated feature. A series
of bracketed exposures can be selected and the Merge to HDR feature then aligns the images
automatically. It is recommended that the photographer brackets the exposures using the shutter
speed rather than the aperture for optimum results.
