Step 2: Preliminary Assessment. Preliminary assessment entails
determining an individual’s readiness for career problem solving and
decision making (Crites, 1974; Fredrickson, 1982; Super, 1983). The
CTI (Sampson et al., 1996a) described earlier is one of several readi-
ness screening measures that can be used at this point in service deliv-
ery. The CTI includes items relating to self-knowledge, occupational
knowledge, the CASVE cycle, and executive processing (Peterson et
al., 1991; Peterson, Sampson, Reardon, & Lenz, 1996). When dis-
cussing CTI results with the client, the terms negative career thinking
ornegative career thoughtsare used in place of dysfunctional career think-
ingordysfunctional career thoughtsto avoid inappropriately labeling the
client. Based on information gained from the initial interview and
any readiness assessment measure, the outcome of the preliminary
assessment process is a determination of the client’s level of readiness
for career counseling and decision making—low, moderate, or high.
