There are a couple of pieces that remain at the top of
my bejewelled wish list (should anyone be asking): a
vintage Cartier Tank watch; a sculptural Bone cuff in
sterling silver by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany; and vintage
shoulder-grazing, showstopping earrings by Christian
Lacroix. Statement investment pieces will always have
the wow factor, but there’s an array of independent
brands now making up the backbone of my day-to-day
jeweldrobe. These pieces are worn every day, are more
stylish than sentimental, can be styled for day-to-night
and are perfect for buying for yourself.
I love Colville’s statement earrings; the brand’s
founders, Molly Molloy, a former design director at
Marni, and Lucinda Chambers, previously fashion
director at British Vogue, know their way around a
cracking quirky accessory. Colville’s two-tone Calamari
earrings are no exception.
Mejuri is a Canadian fine jewellery brand loved by
everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to the Duchess of
Cambridge. Known for its covetable jewellery basics,
from perfect gold ribbed hoops to a pavé-diamond
signet ring, it had a successful pop-up on South Molton
Street, London, earlier this year — I expect a more
permanent UK home soon. Meanwhile the chunky gold
chain trend shows no sign of waning, and few do it better
than the New York-based designer Laura Lombardi —
just add a white tee and pair of classic jeans.
Other brands on my radar? I love the Scottish
designer Ruth Leslie’s dangly earrings and sculpted
rings — she twists wire with an old-school hand drill in
her studio in Edinburgh. Adore Adorn, the brainchild
of the New York designer Sasha Flynn, has a collection
of epic, knuckle-grazing cocktail rings that feature
pastel gemstones (from £175). And the Japanese brand
Hirotaka’s selection of ear furniture — from cuffs to its
Spear earrings — are all I need to upgrade my current
daily uniform of jeans and a black rollneck.
Finally, initial pendants have become a staple in the
wardrobes of off-duty supermodels and fashion folk,
who love nothing more than parading their names
(remember Celine’s Alphabet necklace?). Pacharee’s
gold-plated and pearl initial necklaces are set to
Hair and make-up: Marisol Steward at Stella Creative Artists using Living Proof and Shiseido. Nails: Joanna Newbold at Arlington Artists using Morgan Taylor; redcarpetbeauty.co.ukachieve cult fashion status soon. ■ @jane_mcfarland
