BAND-SAWN and BLOCK-LAMINATED members shall be divided to minimize the exposure of cross grain in the
face of the member, and:

ANGLE of GRAIN at the face of curved member shall not exceed 30 degrees, unless a
small part size requires otherwise.

INTERSECTIONS at radius and straight members shall be splined or half-lapped, securely glued, and
mechanically fastened.
4.3.5 DADOES shall completely house the male member throughout the entire length of the joint. M
4.3.6 PROFILE for items such as nosings, handrails, or balusters, if not indicated, shall be optional.
4.3.7 FACE STRINGERS at open-end stairs shall be cut and mitered to receive treads and risers.
4.3.8 SHOE RAIL shall include them being plowed to receive balusters and fillet, unless otherwise indicated.
4.3.9 SCOTIA with the end returned.or COVE MOLD, if indicated, shall be provided for each riser; and for open-string stairs, shall be mitered
4.3.10 CLOSED STRINGERS shall include machining to receive the treads, risers, and wedges. MM
4.3.11
T R E A D S
TREADS at open-string stairs shall include:
4.3.11.1 Boring or cutting required to receive balusters. MMM
4.3.11.2 Exposed ends of treads SHAPED to match nosing. M
4.3.11.3 Exposed ends of treads shall have a MITERED return nosing, and: MM
4.3.11.3.1 Leading corner of the tread return shall be mitered to the leading edge of
the tread with a shoulder miter, and: MM
4.3.11.3.1.1 Doweled or biscuit joined. MM
4.3.12 RISERS at open-string stairs shall be mitered.
4.3.13 RISERS shall be rabbetted to receive the back edge of the tread.
4.3.14
RAILS to receive balusters with square or rectangular heads shall be plowed on under-side and provided with
fillet.
4.3.15 Of NEWEL POSTS, when built up, shall be of shoulder-miter, lock-joint, tongues, or splined construction.
4.4
ASSEMBLY
4.4.1
JOINTS at ASSEMBLED WOODWORK shall:
4.4.1.1 Be neatly and accurately made.
4.4.1.2 Be SECURELY GLUED with residue removed from all exposed and semi-exposed surfaces, and:
4.4.1.2.1 Be REINFORCED with glue blocks where essential.
