M O L D I N G S


Require APPLIED MOLDINGS:
4.3.5.1 To be solid stuck and free of finger joints.
4.3.5.2 To be securely and soundly attached, in contact with the adjacent surface.
4.3.5.3 For OPAQUE finish:
4.3.5.3.1 To be CLOSE-GRAIN HARDWOOD of a species of the manufacturer’s option.
4.3.5.3.2 Require moldings to be PRIMED when the doors are factory-primed.
4.3.5.4 For TRANSPARENT finish:
4.3.5.4.1 To be of the SAME SPECIES and GRADE as the face veneer.
4.3.5.4.2 Require molding to be prefinished if doors are factory prefinished.
4.3.5.5 At HPDL-faced doors:
4.3.5.5.1 To be CLOSE-GRAIN HARDWOOD at the manufacturer’s option.
4.3.5.5.2 Require molding to be STAINED or PAINTED to match the face, if so specified.
4.3.6 Require GLAZING MATERIAL to be secured in place with mitered wood-glazing beads or clips with glass
BEDDED in sealant that squeezes out on both sides.
4.3.6.1 GLAZING SEALANTS shall be a quality, elastic-type compound, which is designed for bedding
glazing materials or is recommended for such use by the sealant manufacturer.
4.3.6.2 Glazing gaskets.

E X P O S E D S U R F A C E S


Of EXPOSED SURFACES shall comply with the following smoothness requirements (see Item 7.1 in
COMPLIANCE):
4.3.7.1 SHARP EDGES shall be eased with a fine abrasive.
4.3.7.2 TOP FLAT WOOD surfaces; those that can be sanded with a drum or wide belt sander:
4.3.7.2.1 120-grit sanding M
4.3.7.2.2 150-grit sanding M
4.3.7.3 MOLDED and SHAPED WOOD surfaces:
4.3.7.3.1 120-grit sanding
4.3.7.4 TURNED WOOD surfaces:
4.3.7.4.1 120-grit sanding M
4.3.7.4.2 180-grit sanding M
4.3.7.5 CROSS-SANDING, excluding turned surfaces, is not allowed.
4.3.7.6 TEAR-OUTS, KNIFE NICKS, or HIT-OR-MISS machining is not permitted.
4.3.7.6.1 KNIFE MARKS are not permitted where sanding is required.

4.3.7.6.2 GLUE or FILLER, if used, shall be inconspicuous and match the adjacent surface for
smoothness.
4.3.8

J O I N T S 


Of JOINTS at ASSEMBLED WOODWORK shall:
4.3.8.1 Be neatly and accurately made.
4.3.8.2 Be SECURELY GLUED, with:
4.3.8.2.1 ADHESIVE residue removed from all exposed and semi-exposed surfaces.
4.3.8.3 Be REINFORCED with glue blocks where essential.
4.3.8.4 Utilize clamp nail, biscuit-spline, butterfly, scarf, or dowel joinery. M
4.3.8.5 Utilize biscuit spline, butterfly, scarf, or dowel joinery. M
4.3.8.6 Be MECHANICALLY FASTENED with nails or screws where practical, with:
4.3.8.6.1 Fasteners at solid wood countersunk.
4.3.8.6.2 Fasteners at solid wood in molding quirks or reliefs where possible.
4.3.8.7 SHALL NOT PERMIT fasteners at exposed surfaces of HPDL or overlay sheet products.
