S T R E T C H E R S


STRETCHERS require:
(Note: This is only applicable to base cabinets with separate countertops.)
4.4.11.1 They be provided at BOTH the front and the back of the cabinet body, except:
4.4.11.1.1 At SINK compartments, may run front to back.

4.4.11.2

SOLID STOCK or PLYWOOD be a minimum of 3/4” (19 mm) in thickness and 2” (50.8 mm) in
width.

4.4.11.3

PARTICLEBOARD or MDF be a minimum of 3/4" (19 mm) in thickness and 3-1/2" (88.9 mm) in
width and reinforced as necessary to support the countertop.

4.4.11.4

A PANEL MEMBER, a minimum of 3/4” (19 mm) in thickness, the full length and depth of the
cabinet opening may be used in lieu of stretchers.

4.4.11.5

At DRAWER BANKS, an intermediate front stretcher when the total drawer opening
height exceeds 30” (762 mm). MM

BACKS:


4.4.12.1 Are required ONLY where the cabinet will be set in an unfinished recess or where
the back would be exposed to view, and: M
4.4.12.1.1 Be hardboard or plywood a minimum of 1/8” (3.2 mm) in thickness. M
4.4.12.2 Are REQUIRED and: MM
4.4.12.2.1 Shall be a minimum of 1/4” (6.4 mm) in thickness. MM
4.4.12.2.2 Shall be of an approved semi-exposed material. MM

4.4.12.2.3 Vinyl is permitted, provided it is of the same color as the other semi-exposed
surfaces.
4.4.12.3 When EXPOSED EXTERIOR shall be a minimum of 1/2” (12.7 mm) in thickness.

4.4.12.4

Where NON-HOUSED shall be screwed to the case body, divisions, and/or fixed shelves at a
maximum of 4” (101.6 mm) on center.

4.4.12.5

Where PLOWED IN, with a minimum shoulder of 3/8” (9.5 mm), shall be securely nailed or
stapled to the case body at a maximum of 4” (101.6 mm) on center.

ATTACHMENT of base, tall, and wall-hung cabinet backs by other than the above requirements
for non-housed or plowed-in is permitted, provided it has been independently tested to show
compliance to the Wall Cabinet Structural Integrity Test as shown in Appendix A.
4.4.12.7 Are NOT required to be glued.
4.4.12.8 Require ANCHOR or HANGING STRIPS:
4.4.12.8.1 Except when backs are 1/2” (12.7 mm) or thicker.
4.4.12.8.2 Are allowed on the interior of the cabinet. M
4.4.12.8.3 Are NOT allowed on the interior of the cabinet. MM
4.4.12.9 Shall be rabbeted or dadoed into EXPOSED ENDS. M
4.4.12.10 SHALL BE REMOVABLE, if so specified.
4.4.13


TOE BASES, KICKS, and SLEEPERS:
4.4.13.1 Shall be either SEPARATE from or INTEGRAL to the cabinet body at the manufacturer’s option.

4.4.13.2 SEPARATE BASESset flush or slightly recessed. shall be mechanically fastened to the cabinet bottom with flat-head screws

4.4.13.3 Shall be a minimum of 4” (101.6 mm) high.
4.4.13.4 Shall be a minimum of 3/4” (19 mm) in thickness.
4.4.13.5 SLEEPERS shall be provided at a maximum of 36” (86.4 mm) on center.
