require “fast learning”.
“I was very proud of the way the guys
fought today — the desire,” he said.
“That’s how we need to go about a
whole Test match. We can’t leave it
until the last day and expect to pull off
an enormous feat. We can’t make the
same mistakes that we have made so
far. We have to have that same attitude
we had today. The disappointing thing
about this week is that we made the
same mistakes as last week. We can’t
afford to do that.
“We need to make bigger scores and
apply ourselves better. We are more
than capable of doing it, but we haven’t
so far and that’s why it’s disappointing.”
Root urged his bowlers to be braver,
pitch the ball up and “accept we are
going to be driven”. “With ball in hand,
we didn’t bowl the right lengths,” he
said. “We needed to bowl fuller. As soon
as we did that in the second innings, we
created chances. That’s frustrating. We
did this four years ago and didn’t learn
Broad defends short bowling tactic
from it. We have to be
better.”
Stuart Broad obvi-
ously disagrees with
his captain on this
issue and defended
their decision not to
bowl fuller in his col-
umn in The Mail on Sun-
day. “I think we held the
game well on the open-
ing day,” he said. “Austra-
lia were 221 for two at the
end of play and you
would expect it to be
something closer to 321
when losing so few wick-
ets. Although there is an
argument that we could
have bowled fuller
because the ball did so
little, our economy
rates would have gone
through the roof.”
But Root was alsocritical of the basic errors made in
the field by his team throughout
the match. “The most important
thing for me is the number of
no-balls we keep bowling and the
amount of chances we keep
missing,” he said.
England now fly to Melb-
ourne and will not make any
selection decisions until later
in the week.
Australia will be boosted
for the third Test by the
return of their captain Pat
Cummins and the fast bowl-
er Josh Hazlewood, who
has rejoined the squad
after resting for the
second Test with a mild
side strain. There is a
question mark over
the fitness of Mitchell
Starc, however, as
the fast bowler
appeared to tweak
