Prospects and Limitations of Genetic Testing
Genotyping will be for twenty-fi rst century medicine what the X-rays were for
twentieth century clinical practice. Currently there are some reservations about the
value of genetic testing in prediction of disease as there are multiple factors involved.
It is currently being debated if it is worthwhile to continue with the multi-million
dollar genomewide studies or to decode the entire genomes of individual patients.
Although genomewide association studies have worked better and faster than
expected, they have not explained as much of the genetic component of many
