rfanView is one ofWeb User’s

favourite imageeditors. It’s tiny but

it’s surprisinglypowerful and packed

with features. As well as browsing

thumbnailsof imagesin foldersand

viewingfull-screen photos, you can use

it to set pictures as wallpaper, create

panoramasand slideshows, and add

effects, borders and frames.It even plays

videosand animated GIFs, and because

it supportsplugins,you can expandits

capabilitiesfurther. IrfanView recently

received its first feature update of 2019,

addingnew imageand border effects,

alongwith new optionsin the Capture

and Advanced Batch dialoguewindows.

To add shapesor shadows, click the

relevant optionand a new window

opens.Selectthe shapeyou require,

such as a star.^1 You can changethe

backgroundcolour^2 and adjust the

shadow size.^3 Click‘Apply to current

image’^4 to preview the effect, and

Undo^5 to remove it.

There are two partsto the program –

IrfanView and IrfanView Thumbnails

• bothof whichyou can launchthrough
  the Windows Start menu.Thumbnailsis
  the photo manager. When you selecta
  folder,^1 the imagesit containsappear
  as thumbnails.^2 Hover your mouseover
  one to view its details.^3

To opena photo in IrfanView, either

drag it to the viewer or click the

Openbutton.^1 You can flick backand

forth between imagesin the samefolder

by clickingthe arrow buttons.^2 The Edit

menu^3 containstools for addingtext,

overlays and watermarksto your image.

IrfanView also has a Paint palette

you can openfor quickaccess to its

image-editingtools. To openit, go to

Edit, ‘Show Paint dialog’.From here you

can painton your picture,^1 erase or

clonepart of it,^2 replace colours

and add text,^3 draw shapes,^4 fill

selected areas and match colours.^5

The popularimagebrowser, converter and

editor has recently beenupdated with a number

of new tools and effects. Here’s how to use it

From the Imagemenu^1 you can

create a panorama,rotate and flip

your image, resize it, add frames,adjust

coloursautomaticallyand more. The

latest versionlets you add shadows,

shapesand roundedcornersto the

outsideof your images,^2 as well as

hexagons,stars and hearts.^3
