Control online storage with

Cyberduck FTP software

Most readers will find Cyberduck’s cloud storage

connectionmore useful, however. This supportsmany of

the big names, includingGoogleDrive, OneDrive and

Dropbox. Chooseone from the drop-down menu^1 and click

Connect,^2 which opens a new window. We’re using Google

Drive here, but the steps are similar for other cloud services.

Before you can use Cyberduck, you need to configure it.

Click Open Connection^1 and choosea connectiontype

from the drop-down menu.^2 If you’re uploadingfiles to

your own website, select FTP. Type your domaininto the Server

field,^3 then add your Usernameand Password.^4 You

shouldn’tneed to changethe Port number. Click Connect.^5

Select your account and click Allow^1 to give Cyberduck

access to it. Googlegenerates a code,^2 which you then

copy and paste into Cyberduck’s authentication box.^3

Press Continue^4 to connect. Once connected, you can

right-clickany file and select Share to generate a share link.

Copy this and send it to anyone who needs access to the file.

You can also use Cyberduck as a local File Explorer,

which you may find useful if you’re thinkingof setting

up FTP on your home network or you want to share the

files on your computer easily. In this instance, click Open

Connection^1 and select your computer from the list. It’s the

last option in the drop-down menu.^2

yberduck is a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) tool of the

type web designers use to move files to and from their

web host’s servers. Don’t let that put you off, though,

because even if you’re not a web designer, thismultifaceted

software has plentyto offer, thanksto excellentsupportfor

cloudstorageservices suchas OneDrive andGoogleDrive.

Perhapsits most usefulfeature is the abilityto transfer files

andfoldersdirectlyfrom oneonlinestorageservice to

anotherwithoutdownloadingthemfirst. What’s more,

after a recent majorupdate, you cancreate temporary

sharinglinkswhensavingto Dropbox, GoogleDrive

andOneDrive. Cyberduckis free, too, although

you cansupportthe developersby donatingor

buyingits appfrom the Windows Store.

graphical interface, there’s a command-

line version for those who prefer using

CommandPrompt. You’ll find details of

how to downloadit for Windows, macOS

and Linux atduck.sh.The standard

version also has a File Explorer-like

navigation system under the ribbon that

lets you see your Bookmarksand History,

and provides an address bar and arrows

to help you move easily between folders.
