Update and scanwith security
software
If you useWindowsDefenderfor security
in Windows10, it’s easy to leave it
runningin thebackgroundwithout
payingit muchattention.However, if left
aloneit onlyperformsquickscansof the
places malware is most likelyto lurk,so
it’s worthupdatingthevirussignatures
manuallyandperforminga thorough
scaneverynow andthen.
Right-clicktheWindowsDefendericon
in thetaskbarandselect‘View security
dashboard’. Click‘Virus& threat
protection’,thencheckfor updates by
clickingthelinknearthebottom.Click
‘Scanoptions’andchoosea ‘Fullscan’,
followed by‘Scannow’.
You shouldn’tneedto update
WindowsDefender’s virusdefinitions
manually, butif you do, you can
downloadthemfrombit.ly/wddef4 79.
Evenif you useothersecuritytools,
it’s still worthdoinga thoroughmanual
scanonce in a while.

Print selectedtext
In thepast, whenI wantedto print
somethingfroma web page, I’d printthe
entire page. Sometimesit cameouton
more thanonesheet,whichwas a waste
of inkandpaper. However, I recently
discovered that you canchoosehow
muchof a web pageyou want to print.
If you opena web pagein Chrome,
thenright-clickandselectPrint,Chrome
printsthewholepage. However, if you
clickanddragto selectpartof a page,
thenright-clickandchoosePrint,
Chromeprintsonlytheselectedpart.
This workswhetheryou selecttext,
imagesor both,andpreventswaste.

Enable Hover Cards to
preview Chrome tabs
Asyou know, hoveringyour mouse
pointer over a tabin Chromerevealsthe
nameof thepage, butI’ve discovered an
evenbetter wayof checkingwhat a tab
containswithoutopeningit. You’llneed
ChromeBeta(www.google.com/chrome/
beta)for thisbecausethefeature isn’t
availablein thestandard versionyet.
Openchrome://flags/#tab-
hover-cardsandselectEnabledfrom
thedrop-downmenu.Next,goto
chrome://flags/#tab-hover-
card-imagesandEnablethat too. Once
you’ve relaunchedthebrowser, you’llfind
that hoveringover a tabrevealsa card
containinganimageof what’s onthe
page. It’s ridiculouslyuseful.
