Smart Buildings Systems for Architects, Owners and Builders

(ff) #1

One of the most innovative uses of digital signage is for life safety, where a
digital signage system augments the fire alarm and building automation sys-
tems. Digital signage is located near the traditional “exit” signs at egress
points. In an emergency such as a fire alarm if a stairwell is not safe for evac-
uation, the digital display can provide a message such as “Smoke in Stairwell,
Do Not Enter, Saferoom is Room 12.” The system can allow the fire com-
mand center or emergency command that responds to the alarms the ability
to control the signage and view the situation through an optional camera, thus
improving evacuation and response (Fig. 8.4).
Deployments of digital signage systems are facilitated by existing data net-
works, shortening commissioning times. The uses and content of the systems
are very flexible and can be tailored to organization needs. Video distribution
will continue to penetrate, evolve, and be delivered through standard smart
building infrastructure.
