hirteen years ago, when I was
lucky enough to interview a
then-22-year-old Lady Gaga on
the verge of mainstream
success, she described her collaborative
songwriting style as a process that allowed
her to “synthesize other people’s ideas
and edit them and make them better.” I’d
like to think she’d be proud of how I
