9.3 Fish passes

9.3.1 Introduction

Environmental and fishery protection interests require the provision of
appropriate facilities as an integral part of dams and weirs. Fish protection
facilities consist of fish passes for safe migration (ladders, lifts) and
screens. The design of a satisfactory fish passage must be based on the
study of fish behaviour and swimming performance, hydraulics and
general ecological flow management. A discussion of these aspects with a
comprehensive list of references can be found in Katopodis (2005).
