Duringthepastthreeyearsthebiographicalsectionhasdevelopedinto
anopenforumtowhichalltheexhibitorsareurgedtocontribute.Our
policyhasbeentoprintwhatevertheartistiswillingtowrite,whethera


fairlylongdiscourseonlifeandartingeneralormerelyacommentthathe
prefersnottodiscusshisownworkoranyotherart.Fore\enastatement
thatonedoesnotwishtomakeastatementissignificant;onlythedark


uncertaintyofnoresponseatallis%alueless.Referenceisgivenincases
whereourexhibitorsha\'emadeobser\ationsforthecataloguesofprevious
showsbutapparentlydonotfeelitprofitabletoelaborateortopresent
otherfacetsoftheirconceptsinwritingatthistime.Itisregrettablethat


thenatureofthecatalogueprohibitsprintinginfullsomeofthelonger
discu.ssionswhichwerecontributedandwhichwchopethewriterswill
submittoanappropriatejournalforpublication.


Weare.stillinaperiodofreactionfromtheoverlyliteraryinterpre-


tationofpaintingsofahundredyearsago,whencommentatorsweretoo
oftenblindtotheroleofformalfactorsapartfromphotographicdescrip-


tion.However,thegreatmajorityoftheartistshavewrittensomething
againthisyear.Aswillbequiteapparent,insomeinstancesthecomments
relatedirectlyandfullytothepictureonview,thusser\ingasakindof
ideologicalaid.Suchremarksareinthenatureofaninstructionaldevice,

comparableinareversewaytothe"visualaid"—adiagramorfilm—


whichassistsinunderstandingscientifictheorybutwhichisdefinitelya
simile,notasubstitutefortrueperception ofwhatarcsurmisedtobe
actualphysicalbutinvisiblefacts.
Otherofthepaintershavespokenmoregenerally,andwhattheyset
forthoftenhasanexistenceandasignificancequiteapartfromanyspe-
cificworkofart,butnolessvalidincontributingtotheintensificationof
experienceandtheawarenessoflife.
