tationofpaintingsofahundredyearsago,whencommentatorsweretoo
oftenblindtotheroleofformalfactorsapartfromphotographicdescrip-
tion.However,thegreatmajorityoftheartistshavewrittensomething
againthisyear.Aswillbequiteapparent,insomeinstancesthecomments
relatedirectlyandfullytothepictureonview,thusser\ingasakindof
ideologicalaid.Suchremarksareinthenatureofaninstructionaldevice,comparableinareversewaytothe"visualaid"—adiagramorfilm—
whichassistsinunderstandingscientifictheorybutwhichisdefinitelya
simile,notasubstitutefortrueperception ofwhatarcsurmisedtobe
actualphysicalbutinvisiblefacts.
Otherofthepaintershavespokenmoregenerally,andwhattheyset
forthoftenhasanexistenceandasignificancequiteapartfromanyspe-
cificworkofart,butnolessvalidincontributingtotheintensificationof
experienceandtheawarenessoflife.- Andinsomecasesoneisremindedofthem\stics,medie\alandmod-
ern,whousewordswhicharesatisfactoryfordescribingpurelyfactual
mattersbutwoefullyinadequateforexpressingwhattheyfeeltobeapro-
foundersignificance.Likeanunusualpainting,commentsofthistypemay
