In 1946 hewonFirstPrizeattheCarnegieInstituteandin 1950 oneofhis
picturesreceivedapurchaseprizeattheUniversityofIllinois.Recentlytwoofhis
paintingshavebeenpurchasedbytheNationalMuseumsofFrance,oneofthem
beinghisLazarusResurrected,whichwasintheUniversityofIllinoisExhibitionof
ContemporaryAmericanPaintingin1949.Hisworkformspartofthepermanent
collectionsof the Universityof Pittsburgh,Hundred FriendsofArt, ShellOil
Company,LatrobeArtFund,UniversityofIllinois,municipalmuseumofAmsterdam,

HewasborninNewYorkCityin 1916 andstudiedattheNationalAcademyof
Designin 1937 and1938.One-manshowsbeganin1941.Oflate,Franks'sworkhas
beenshownintheexhibitionsoftheWhitneyMuseumofAmericanArtinNewYork,
PennsylvaniaAcademyoftheFineArts(1944),ArtInstituteofChicago(1947),and
elsewhere.TeachingexperienceincludesworkfortheBrooklynNeighborhoodHouses
andprivatestudents.HelivesinNewYorkCity.

asleep,andbuildingsandplacesknownbydaytakeonaquitedifferentsignificance.
Themoon,whichorshouldIsay'who'forsomanythousandsofyearshadsuchan
emotionalsignificancetopeople,hasnotyetbeencompletelyexplainedaway,and
thechurch,thepresenceofGod,isnevermoreapparentthanwhenpeoplehavegiven
overtheirconsciouswakinglivestosleep.ThescenethatIhavepaintedexists,
physically,verymuchasIhaveputitdown.Thechurch,asymbolofourbeliefin
apowergreaterthanourselves,theclusteredhouses,showingourneedforourfellow
man,thelonelymountainsandthemoon.Inoneformoranotherthesesameelements
haveexistedthroughouttheworld,andformanycenturies.Iwasinterestedinfinding
themsocompleteandentireinRoanoke,andsoIpaintedthem."
Fransioliwasbornin.Seattle,Washington,in1906.Upongraduationfromthe
UniversityofPennsylvaniahepracticedarchitectureforovertenyears.Forabout
sixmonthshestudiedattheArtStudentsLeagueofNewYork.Followingdischarge
fromtheArmyin 1946 hetookuppaintingseriously.
PrizesandawardsincludefirstpurchaseprizeattheBostonSocietyofInde-
pendentArtistsshowsin 1948 and 1949 andapopularprizeattheInstituteofCon-
temporaryArt inBostonin1949. Hisworkhasappearedrecentlyinnational
exhibitionsandisrepresentedinthepermanentcollectionsoftheMuseumofFine
ArtsinBoston;CurrierGalleryofArt,Manchester,NewHampshire;andtheFarns-
worthArtMuseuminRockland,Maine,aswellasinprivatecollections.Helivesin
Cambridge,Massachusetts.
