experiencethroughthe'pictorial'realizationoftheinitiatingconceptbywhichthe
feelingsaspectofonedomainis'transformedandimbedded'inthefeelingaspectof
anotherdomain.

deepestconcerntotheartist.Itwillbeapictorialformulationofhisethicaland
estheticalcreedswithwhichtoparticipate,asanartist,(intlirculturaljustification

HansHofmannwasborninBavariain1880.HestudiedartinGermanyand
al.so,from 1907 to1914,inParis.AVhileinEuropehebecamewell-knownasateacher
aswellasanartist.In19.10hewascalledtoAmericabytheUniversityofCalifornia.
Sincethenhehascontinuedpaintingandteachingwithceaselessvigorandhasestab-
lishedhisownartschoolinProvincetown,Ma.ssachusetts,andNew^'orkC^ty.His
workhasbeenexhibitedwidelyandisrepresentedinvariouscollections.TheUni-
versityofIllinoisawardedoneofhispicturesapurchaseprizein1950.Helivesin
NewYorkCityforalargepartofeachyear.
