LawrencewasborninAtlanticCity,NewJersey,in 1917 butspentmostofhis
childhoodinEastonandPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania.HemovedtoNewYorkCity
in 1931 whereheattendedtheVVPAAnSchool(HarlemArtWorkshop),studied
withCharlesAlston,andfrom 1937 to 1938 attendedtheAmericanArtists.School.
Theyears1939-1940broughtworkontheFederal.ArtProject;1941-1942,travelin
theSouth.Fromlatein 1943 tolatein 1945 LawrenceservedintheUnitedStates
CoastGuard.Inthesummerof 1946 hetaughtatBlackMountainCollege,Black
Mountain,NorthCarolina.
.AwardsincludeRosenwaldfellowshipsin1940,1941,and1942;apurchaseprize
in theArtistsforVictoryshowattheMetropolitanMuseumofArtin 1942;a
CiuggcnheimFellowshipin 1945;Opjtortunitymagazineaward in1948;purchase
prizeat.AtlantaUniversityin1948;theHarrisMedalatthe.ArtInstituteofChicago;
andHonorableMentionatthePennsylvaniaAcademyoftheFine.Arts,alsoin1948.
