thenamatterofconveying,throughpainterlymeans,whatIcouldofmyreactions
totheoriginalemotionsfelt.
"Thefeelinginvolvedinthispaintingismorethanthatofacasualobserver,for,
althoughIwasborninWashington,D.C.,myparentswerebornandraisedinthis
self-samefishingcommunityinNorthCarolina.
"Inthispaintingmanisrelegatedtoaminorroletothatplayedbythespirited
trawlerwithitscolorfulcostumeofnetsandequipment,andtothesupportingroles
ofthewharf,seaandsky."
LewiswasborninWashington,D.C.,in1920. Hisformaltraininginartwas
takeninWashingtonattheCorcoranSchoolofArt.Hisworkhasbeenseenin
one-manexhibitionsandingroupshowsintheEastandSouth.Awardsinclude
FirstPrizeinoilsattheArtsClubofWashington,D.C.,in1947;FirstPrizeinoils
attheSocietyofWashingtonArtistsin1949;thethirdawardindrawinginthe
WashingtonAreaExhibitionattheCorcoranGalleryof.^rtinWashington,D.C.,
in1950;aLouisComfortTiffanyFoundationScholarshipin1950,whichtookhim
toNewOrleansthenextyear;FirstPrizeinoilsattheGoldenAnniversaryEx-
hibitionoftheIsaacDelgadoMuseumofArtinNewOrleansin1951;andthefirst
purchaseawardinoils($500)intheSoutheasternAnnualExhiljitionattheHigh
MuseumofArtinAtlanta,Georgia,in1951.
