inwordswhatonehopestohavesaidadequatelythroughplasticmeans,andthe
seemingpermanencyofthewrittenwordtendstobeliethemobilityandchangeable
characteroftheplasticmeaning.
"CactusandSundryisprimarilyapaintingofmood.Thejagged,sharpshapes
oftheplantwereveryintriguingtome.Afterthefirstemotionalandempathic
responsetotheplant,Itriedthroughfreedistortionsofnaturalforms[andtheuseof]
spaceandcolortoconveythefeelingoftensionsorampantinourcivilization."
JoyceTreimanwasborninEvanston,Illinois,in1922.SheattendedStephens
CollegeatColumbia,Missouri,butwasgraduatedfromthe StateUniversityof
Iowain 1943.Uponreceivingherdegreeshewasawardedafellowship todo
graduateworkatIowa.One-manshowshadalreadybegunin1942;herNewYork
debutoccurredin1950.OtherhonorsandawardsincludeaTiffany Foundation
FellowshipGrantin1947; purchaseprizesat theDenverArtMuseumandthe
NorthwestTerritoryShowatSpringfield, Illinois,the nextyear; the Armstrong
PrizeattheArtInstituteofChicagoin1949;andtheBartelsPrizeatthesame
institutionin1950,followedbytheLoganMedalandpurchaseprizeof$500inthe
fifty-fifthannualexhibitionbyartistsofChicagoandvicinityin1951.Lastyear
broughtalsoFirstPrizeintheChicagoAreaArtistsshowatWinnetka,Illinois.Her
paintingsareappearinginnationalexhibitionsinincreasingnumbers.TheDenver
MuseumofArt,StateUniversityofIowa,andIllinoisStateMuseumofNatural
HistoryandArt,aswellasprivatecollectors,ownexamplesofherwork.Herhome

whatIfeltaboutit."
ShewasborninNewYorkCityin 1908 andstudiedattheArtStudentsLeague
ofNewYorkwithBoardmanRobinsonandRobertLaurent.Herworkhasbeen
exhibitedinwell-knownnationalexhibitionsandshehasareputationasawriteron
artaswellasapainter.SomeofherbooksareWaldoPierce(1941),CarolBrant
(1945),and(asco-author)ModernAmericanPainting(1939).Inaddition,articles
havebeencontributedtomagazinesonart—StudioPublications,MagazineofArt—
andtoLifemagazine,ofwhichshebecameanassociateeditorin1936.
