my new book ... so that if the worst does happen, it won't be lost to
humanity! But I'm not quite so pessimistic as I sound. We are nearer to
the danger here and our anxiety is naturally greater, for if war does
come our island will be wiped out this time.
Delighted to hear that the wheels are still turning.

Dear Both,

We got our visas easily and all is set to sail on the 3rd Aug.
Only bother is that the Bank of England wouldn't grant me any money,
so that all we are allowed to take is £5 each so that we can pay our
rail journey when we return. So that we shall arrive without any dollars
at all.
The war cloud comes and goes here, so that we can't forget it for
long. Oh boy, it is to be good to see you again. Good to taste Canadian
rye and ice cream sodas and smoke cheaply... damnation, I gave it
up and began again. Weak guy am I.
Love to you all. And I hope to see your cheerful faces one day at
Farmington, * but if that fool man Reich starts to brag about his new
car it will surely break down.

I can't wait till I see you to say how much I enjoyed the
Little Man. It is brave, true, a shattering indictment, and, tell Wolfe,
excellently translated. I was against its publication, you will recall, but
I think you were right and I was wrong. It forestalls the plague folks,
