Record of a Friendship

(Ben Green) #1

hits them before they hit you, so to say. I wish it could have a wide
circulation in England. Good woick, wise guy!
The only thing I hate is the voyage of 8 days. I hate the sea because
I have nothing to do but read and eat, and I hate train journeys for the
same reason. I can drive a car 400 miles with much pleasure because I
am doing something, not being static.
It will be a great joy to meet you again. This time I may again beg
for the use of a typewriter, for Ena and I want to write a joint book on
bringing up babies. And for a time I'll try to forget the war-makers and
the Little Men who let them make wars. God, what a hell of a lot of
truth you have packed into that book.
Love to you and lise and Peter. It will be wonderful to see him
and Zoe together.

[Neill, Ena, and Zoe arrived in the United States August 10. After
spending several days at the Hamilton School in Sheffield, Massa
chusetts, they went to stay with the Reichs at Orgonon in Maine,
where Neill took part in a Conference on Prevention of Bio
pathies. In the middle of September, Ena and Zoe returned home
for the beginning of the school term. Neill stayed on at Orgonon
till the end of September. He spent October in New York, part of
the time with the Reichs in Forest Hills, and gave a number of
lectures and seminars before returning to England in early
November.]

New York
Sunday [October 3, 1948]
Dear Both,
I hated to leave you and the loveliness of Maine... and
Peter's milk & the whiskey & of course the arguments about Stalin, but
I think I was right to leave you, for there is so much to do here. Yester
day in my jeans and no collar I signed a contract with the Hermitage
Press and got 500$ advance royalties. Now I sit down to write an
article on discipline for the N.Y. Times Mag. and lunch with the editors
on Tues. Guess that means a s:uit and tie though ... damn 'em.
