Record of a Friendship

think I'll never see any money from him. Constance seems happier.
Don't know if she is going to work or at what.
I am wondering if I should continue treating adolescents here. There
are snags. As a layman I daren't treat naked boys or bathing-costumed
girls, at least it might lead to bad gossip, and treating them with layers
of clothes on isn't satisfactory. A bigger snag is my ignorance of
anatomy. I could easily mistake a swollen gland in the neck for a muscle
rigidity. Perhaps I should stick to my job-teaching. On the other hand,
some of them do get a lot of relief from my treatment.
A bit early to make plans for next summer trip over. With my book
more or less a flop in U.S.A., with training colleges paying poor fees
(some of them anyway), it may be that my name won't get me enough
income to pay our travel expenses. Ena says if not I should go alone,
but if I can't bring her and Zoe I ain't coming.

June loth, 1949

I have yours of June 3rd, and I am glad that you refused to
appear together with this sadistic pervert. Somewhere, the action of
Copping, though it was irrational from the standpoint of success, ap
pears very rational in a deeper sense, if you understand what I mean.
Such fellows who produce and sell canes for teachers and parents to
beat up their children, deserve to be punished severely by society. But
since society not only does not punish them, but gives them all honors,
even that of appearing in public supported by organizations, I can un
derstand the action of an idealist like Copping. The law and public
opinion unfortunately will for a long time be on the side of the pervert
and against the one who rebels against it. This does not mean that I
defend Copping's action, but I understand it.
In the question of your treatment of adolescents, it is hard to give
advice. To my conviction, only medical men, well-trained in orgone
biophysics, should do medical orgone therapy. But I don't see, on the
other hand, how educators like you or Hamilton can avoid treating
adolescents.
I am postponing the decision on the Eastmond affair until further
discussions will have taken place.
