Record of a Friendship

(Ben Green) #1

The situation here is that the communist teachers and parents (I
mean in Britain) demand for the working class what they consider the
privileges of the upper classes, meaning that they accept Eton and the
Grammar School standard, as they are doing in Hungary, Poland, etc.
In a communist Britain Zoe would be kept down while children of
manual workers would get a higher education, and, gangster led or not,
the workers with their big numbers would take the hate way, and swamp
the other classes.
This is all outside my province I admit. I only give facts, and these
are that at least half the domestics we've had, some of them for ten
years, are cynical or even hostile when they leave.
You keep writing that I shouldn't get depressed. I don't feel so much
depressed as dead, numb, frustrated, puzzled, afraid. I can't be positive
and do what I long to do ... publish the story as a warning that that
isn't the way to fight communism. I can't do it and thus assure my being
blacklisted for ever from U.S.A. But things seem to move so fast to a
world war that no one will be interested in whether an individual gets
a visa or not. Our daily papers get more disturbing every day.
Depressed? My dear Reich, I can't see the silver lining of the clouds,
and I don't mean war clouds; I mean the working together in the interest
of babies, the personal contact that inspires. If a visa is refused then you
and I are parted for a long long time.
Back to my phrase! I say the workers of this generation GIVE power
if they don't HAVE power: I think that Stalin and Co. could not exist
a day if they did not know the working class are still thinking of the
class war, jealous of the middle and upper classes, but wanting to copy
them at the same time. In short, the previously exploited millions are
easy to exploit in their tum, changing their masters only. But this is an
argument for a long evening over a bottle.
To think of practical things, what do I do IF a visa is granted? I
might come alone if only for a few weeks. I do so much want to hear
what happened at the conference.
And don't let us quarrel about phrases, my friend.
