Record of a Friendship

that if I am interrupted in a sketch by visitors my annoyance is greater
than when reading a book or even writing one.
Hal M. Wells who bought the magazine Complex asks me for a long
article on communistic education, saying they would add a paragraph
saying I had been refused a visa. I am going to do it.
I don't agree with you about my American boy pupil not fitting in
because England is different from U.S.A. To me it is much simpler than
that... the kid is parked here without ever having a home and his
lack of home love is enough to make him unhappy.
The new Bulletin is fascinating. I see now what you meant about
new-born babes, and your explanation of dowsing seems to be final and
true. I must have a shot at it. But your pages about not approaching
orthodox scientists do not seem to me to be the whole story. There is
an element of Schadenfreude [malicious gloating] in it. "See here,
Bernal, I want to show you that a better man than you has got more
of the truth." I don't think it means an attempt to say: "You are a
prof of biology, do tell me if Reich is right or wrong." However, I'll
never try to approach any orthodox scientists on behalf of Orgone
science. By the way the leading name is now [Jacob] Bronowski in
scientific circles.

In the meantime you have replied to Wells and though it may
cost you some dollars it will certainly be most helpful to your reputation
not to have published in Wells' journal. *
I am enclosing a copy of the laws of immigration. I still want you to
know that your trouble is not due to the basic structure of the United
States but to the fact that the arbitrary conduct of a single Catholic
consul can remain unchanged because people keep silent. I still think it
will be possible to counteract the situation in London and to get you
a visa next summer.

* Reich had wired Neill to have nothing to do with Hal Wells, the new editor
of Complex, who, he said, was an enemy of the Orgone Institute.
