My dear Reich,

October 16, 1954For the past weeks I have been concerned with the vexed
question of health, vexed because I cannot find any solution. My
orthodox medical friends say I have caught a bug. But I can't believe
the bug theory. What troubles me is that no one seems to know the root
cause of disease. So many think they hold the secret of health. Naturo
paths with their diet and cold compresses, doctors with their drugs and
injections, all sorts of cranks who think that higher thought will give
health. The young doctors here all talk of psychosomatic. Then a
Churchill full of energy who has eaten unbalanced diets, smoked too
much, drunk too much brandy is a fit man, while many a vegetarian
crank is not.
I have slowly come to the conclusion that the Box isn't suited for
this climate. Raknes's shooter in Oslo gave me hot waves; mine here,
with more layers, does not. I say it is the dampness ever in our atmo
sphere. I can sit 3,4 hour in mine and not get too hot. It doesn't help me
to think that R. is more fully charged with orgone energy.
I am 7 I tomorrow and I take it that from now to the end health and
some illness will take more of my attention. I hear that Ilse is at the
Hamiltons'. Only other news is that Dianetics is becoming a popular
craze in London. The tenth rate always succeeds.
I fancy that the Democrats will get a majority next month and if they
do there just might be an easing of the visa situation, but the hope is
only one in a million. I wish I could think that east and west could live
in peace; l ean 't and fear that next year the Chinese will attempt to take
Formosa, U.S.A. will support Formosa and the 3rd war will begin.
Danish teacher back from visit to U.S.S.R. says to me : "The Kinder
gartens are all Pavlovised. A baby must never be alone because he
would become an individual, so that teachers see that every child feels
and thinks as the group."
