Record of a Friendship

(Ben Green) #1

The only chance is to disarm all ro und, to divide the world and stick
to the division. But I fear the plague would not let his voice be heard.
How there can be peace I can't imagine; too much hate and fear on
both sides. Meanwhile we just wait; the common man has no say in his
destiny either in East or West. But I wish we did not have to live on
the edge of a volcano as we now do.
My dear friend, I don't care a damn if I see you acclaimed in the
Times or not. I do want to see your name in all papers, not for your
fame, but for your turning desert into fertile land. If a Bernal could do
it I'd be pleased to see it broadcast also.
Last week I gave the Foundation Oration at a large gathering in
London University Education Dept. Over 600 there including profs of
psychology etc. They seemed to enjoy the lecture.
Now I must sit down and think out what I am to say to Ritter.
Mein Gott, the young are so difficult to handle.

My dear Reich,

I have written to Ritter telling him in very guarded words that
you don't want him to carry on with OF [Orgonomic Functionalism]. I
could not of course quote what you say about him. One result will most
likely be that he will send you long letters of defence and explanation
and you'll get fed up with him. So I am going to make the suggestion
that you settle the matter by telling him plainly but kindly what you
don't like in his magazine. I am getting tired of explaining to him that
you won't tolerate any interpreters, especially any who have not under
gone therapy with a qualified man.
Where I am troubled is his enthusiasm, his genuine belief that no one
alive has anything to say of any value barring W.R. That makes it diffi
cult... how to restrain him without dealing a mortal blow at his
enthusiasm.
You are like me, you hate to be cruel to folks. In a fit of temper we
can act but when one has to censure someone in cold blood it is an un
happy business.
Damn all this waste of time and paper and postage on Ritter's behalf.
Go on, Reich; tell him his self-regno is wrong, his functionalism abused,
