Record of a Friendship

(Ben Green) #1

I don't like to see his enemies crow: "So the great Reich has given you
the big push!" I think Ritter is, as I say, genuine even with all his
faults of youth. I have a sneaking admiration for his decision to carry on
in spite of your opposition, even if I think he is misguided.
I wonder if after Geneva [summit conference] U.S.A. will relax her
visa policy. It would be a great joy to be able to come over to see you
again.

Here is the copy [the edited version of Neill's 1950 paper]. I
simply can't say more about sex; safety first must continue to be my
motto as long as I have Summerhill.
Your new booklet about Red Fascism * makes sad reading for me.
I think: "It is appalling to think that a creative man like R. should have
to waste his time and energy on fighting enemies who fundamentally
don't mean much ... who will know Brady's name in 1974? I wish I
could see you ignore the whole bloody mob of nobodies."
True I have never been persecuted, never been attacked by the law,
so that I can't think personally about it all. But, my dear friend, I feel
you overstretch the red fascist element; innovators were persecuted
before either communism or fascism were invented. Would you say that
Galileo was the victim of red fascism? Unless you mean that the colour
today of yesterday's Pharisee or Inquisitionist is red. I dunno. You
confuse me.

One of myoid pupils married a psychoanalyst and I went to
the wedding party. Filled with followers of Melanie Klein. Interesting
