to hear their talk. I mentioned your name as a test; their faces clouded
with disapproval which amused me. They can't laugh; Melanie has
evidently shown them that humour is a complex which no normal free
man should have. To my asking what Klein was doing to prevent com­
plexes there was silence. I said: you can't analyse humanity but you can
attempt to get a humanity that won't need analysis. No answer. Gott,
they were a dull crowd. I couldn't help comparing them with the life
and energy of the Orgonon conferences. They depressed me ... rather
like talking to communists with a blank curtain that you can't penetrate.
Am having a difficult time in the school. Can't get a necessary
teacher; they won't come for the small salary and I can't pay more. So
I have to teach all the time myself, and at 72 it is no fun to teach
children how to count 2 and 7.
I am hoping that by next summer the U.S.A. will have relaxed their
visa policy.
I haven't heard from you for some time. Now that Ilse has gone you
seem to have to write by hand. She writes sometimes from Sheffield.
