Notice the reflections in the eyes of the insect in the previous photo. Obviously a ring light was
used for this one.
They are also popular for use in shooting models and elderly people because the light is coming
straight into the face and filling in all the shadows. Filling in all the shadows will visually
eliminate wrinkles.
Personally, I don’t like them for that use because I think that the ring light shaped catch-light in
the models’ eyes looks strange.
But, for a macro shot, they work real well.
