Chapter 6: The Photo Histogram

Explained

Our last “technical” subject involves getting the best exposure.

Previously we discussed the difficulties in getting enough light for a proper exposure and all the
various techniques we can use to increase the light getting to our sensor...

But, how can we tell if we are getting the right exposure? The viewing screen is NOT necessarily
(or even usually) an accurate depiction of the way a photo is going to turn out. So what can we
do?

Enter the histogram.

The histogram is another of those features found on most of the higher end cameras - which you
probably aren't using. And should!

First - the photo histogram explained. What is it?

The photo histogram is that graph that looks like a mountain range with spikes shooting up at
seemingly random places. The scary thing is that when you see it, it looks really technical. Most
of us immediately try for the land speed record in turning it off!
