opposite (“Orrest Head”). In 350m, right
at bench (412990); in 300m, right on
path to Orrest Head (415993). North on
path for 700m to road (417000); right to
Near Orrest (419001). Left here (“Far
Orrest”) on path via Far Orrest (414007),
past Allen Knott to lane at Fusethwaite
Yeat (414013). Left; at fork, left downhill;
in 200m, left (411011); over cattle grid
(411010), fork left to Far Orrest (413007).
Track south (“Windermere via Crosses”)
to road at Crosses Farm (411000). Left;
in 150m, right (413999) for 600m to
path junction in High Hay Wood
(410994); left to A591 and station.
Getting there Rail to Windermere; bus
555/556 from Kendal. Road: Windermere
is on A591 from Kendal (M6, Jct 37).

Walk From station follow High Street,
then Park Street (970766) into Windsor
Great Park. Right along Long Walk for
2½ miles to Copper Horse statue
(968727). Continue on Three Castles
Path past Ox Pond (966717) to road
(967717); right to the Village. Pass post
office (955723); in 100m, right at
T-junction; in 250m, left (953726) to
cross A332 at Cranbourne Gate
(948727). Keep ahead to Cranbourne
Tower (944731). Back for 350m; left
(946728) on woodland track to road
(952737); right to recross A332 at
Ranger’s Lodge (954734). Through
gate; gravel path through trees to
Queen Anne’s Ride (959729). Left
for just over 1¼ miles to Queen
Anne’s Gate (965749). Right to
lodge on Long Walk (969747);

Windsor ParkThe walk starts with a sensational view
from Butser Hill — South Downs
billowing east and west, Portsmouth,
Southampton and the Isle of Wight on
the southern horizon, the Devil’s Punch
Bowl northeast. Drop down into chalky
holloways to pass the ponds where the
River Meon springs, before climbing to
return along the South Downs Way.

Getting there Butser Hill is signed from
A3 between Horndean and Petersfield.
Walk Past radio station and trig pillar
(717203). On down to wide grass track
near fence (717204); follow it north, then
northwest over Ramsdean Down,
descending to chalk holloway lane
(706212). Right to Oxenbourne Lane;
left; first right; first left along green lane.
In ½ mile, at junction of tracks, left
(696220) down Cumber’s Lane to road
(696214). Right to junction at Lower
Farm (685210). Left (“Clanfield”); in
250m, left over stile (fingerpost);
through paddock, then South Farm
farmyard; cross bridge over source of
River Meon (685205). Follow lane for
1 mile via Upper Barnes (689196),
climbing to meet South Downs Way
(693190); left to road; left to car park.
