bringing spells of rain to
England, Wales and Scotland,
turning fairly light and patchy

a trough of low pressure will
push further showers into the
northwest. A strong south
to southwesterly fl ow will
continue to bring mild weather.

T
he UK’s climate is growing
warmer, wetter and
sunnier. The average
temperature of the country
has risen by 0.8C, rainfall is
up by 7.3 per cent and there has
been 5.6 per cent more sunshine
over the past 30 years.
Met Office figures are broken
down into blocks of 30 years, and
comparing the 1991-2020 period with
1961-1990 revealed that the climate is
changing, although not in the same
way everywhere. Central and eastern
England have had the greatest
warming, as temperatures rose by
more than 1C in some areas. In
contrast, temperatures in northern
Scotland and Northern Ireland have
risen closer to 0.7C.
“The 21st century is the warmest
period [of] any comparable period in
the past,” said Mark McCarthy at
the Met Office.
In fact, average temperatures that
were previously limited to London
and parts of southern England are
now being felt just over 150 miles
further north — so, for example,
Hull has now become warmer than
Heathrow was in 1961-1990.
At the other extreme, there have
been on average 11 fewer days of
frost across the UK, with the biggest
reductions in counties such as
Northumberland, Derbyshire,
Shetland and Co Londonderry.
The UK is also becoming wetter.
The greatest increases in rainfall
have been experienced across a
large part of Scotland, with Argyll
and Bute drenched by, on average,
more than an extra 200mm a year.
Other notably wetter areas are
upland regions of England, Wales
and Northern Ireland. In contrast,
the smallest rise in rainfall has been
in South Yorkshire, with just a
14mm increase per year.
The rain is also falling more often,
especially in Scotland. Glasgow, for
instance, has had 12 extra days of
rain. In comparison, Cambridge has
had one extra day of rain a year.
One bright spot in the changing
climate is how the UK has become
sunnier, especially in northeast and
eastern England, where the hours of
sunshine have increased by more
than 13 per cent.
