that phosphorus can be a growth-limiting factor inecosystems and therefore
one should avoid buffer systems based on phosphorus.
Laboratory investigations on artificial samples demonstrated a reduction
of the coating using scanning electron microscopy as well as protein staining
(Figures 11 and 12). Application to other types of consolidants should be pos-
sible. Membranes with appropriate immobilized enzymes have to be designed
according to the different materials applied for consolidation. The system devel-
oped in Lower Saxonia is now being adapted to be applied throughout Europe
on several objects with deterioration problems caused by casein coatings.
