FUNNY

OLD

GAME

Comedian
George Lewis
reflects on the
week’s action

Usually at this point we’d
look back on the previous
year and fondly reminisce. But
I’m sure none of us want to
think about the horror show
that was 2021, so let’s get
speculating about 2022.
This year, the gradual
automatisation of refereeing
will make human refs look so
inconsistent and inadequate
that they are no longer fit for
purpose. It will reach its peak
when Manchester City are
awarded a penalty instead of a
throw-in and Mohamed Salah
is sent off for a header.
After Thomas Tuchel drops
Romelu Lukaku for
complaining to the Italian
media, he will complain about
it to the Italian media. He will
be sold to Newcastle.
Newcastle will break all
January spending records and
assemble a team you could
only get with a cheat on
Football Manager. Their wage
bill will be bigger than the
GDP of Chile and they won’t
win another game all season.
Under Ralf Rangnick, Scott
McTominay will become the
player Roy Keane could’ve
been, but Harry Maguire will
become the player that Titus
Bramble was. Nevertheless,
when other teams see Man
Utd improve under the
manager who taught all of the
other German managers, they
will try to track down the
German who taught the
German who taught the
Germans. Several clubs will
use this formula until Watford
end up with a 104-year-old
manager called Klaus from
Heilbronn. They will qualify
for Europe and the hunt will
begin to find the person who
taught Klaus all he knows.
Leeds will be forced to come
to terms with the fact that if
they keep Marcelo Bielsa at
the helm they will get
relegated. They won’t and will
crash out with an 8-2 loss
against Brentford.
David Moyes will perform a
miracle in east London and
guide West Ham to their first
ever league title. He’ll opt out
of the open-top bus tour and
instead walk 180 miles to
Manchester, stop outside Old
Trafford and give two fingers.
Full backs will continue to
evolve. Most will play higher
up the pitch than centre
forwards and what was once
the least popular position on
the pitch will become the most
desirable. Kids’ Sunday League
games up and down the
country become a shambles.
Derby County’s search for
an owner will become
desperate. Mike Ashley offers
to save them. Other owners
will try to make amends for
their mistakes last year. Stan
Kroenke will donate millions
to charity, the Glazers will
volunteer at a local food bank
and John W Henry will build a
sanctuary for blind, orphaned
donkeys. In their spare time,
they will plot the creation of
the “European Mega League”.
