Using the Period and Other End Marks
Use a period at the end of a declarative sentence.
Marvelous inventions make our lives easier.
Use a period at the end of an imperative sentence.
Please hand me that wrench.
Use a question mark at the end of an interrogative sentence.
Where would the world be without inventors?
Use an exclamation point at the end of an exclamatory sentence or an
interjection.
What a great idea that is! Fantastic!
Exercise 1 Write dec. in the blank if the sentence is declarative, imp. if it is
imperative, int. if it is interrogative, and exc. if it is exclamatory. Add the correct end
mark to each sentence.
int. Do you know who invented suspenders?
dec. 1. I believe it was Mark Twain.
exc. 2. Wow, that was a great idea!
int. 3. Does that information surprise you?
dec. 4. Without Howe’s sewing machine, people would have to sew by hand.
dec. 5. I’m sure clothing would cost more.
