Hyphens
Use a hyphen to show the division of a word at the end of a line. Always divide a
word between syllables.
The Big Dipper is probably the most familiar of all the constella-
tions.
Use a hyphen in compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine.
Use a hyphen or hyphens in certain compound nouns. Check a dictionary.

C He peeled twenty-three apples for the pies.
C 1. I have thirty-five dollars to spend.
- Drew’s great-grandmother knows a lot of interesting stories.

- Jack Benny always said he was thirty-nine.
C 5. This company produces fifty-seven kinds of soup. - The latitude of Chicago is forty-two degrees.
- The mother of my sister’s husband is my sister’s mother-in-law.
C 8. Did you climb all ninety-one steps? - The produce store has twenty-seven kinds of vegetables.
- The piano has eighty-eight keys.
C 11. Jeanna has exactly seventy-three cents in her pocket. - The speed limit on the highway is fifty-five miles an hour.
- The woman over there is my sister-in-law.
C 14. She lives in Boonetown; he lives thirty-three miles away. - There are thirty-eight desks in the room.
