Rittenhouse Square
This elegant square, with its wading pool
and fine statues, marks the heart of the
prosperous Center City neighborhood.
Several excellent restaurants with
sidewalk seating in warm weather line
the east side of the square – a great spot
for people watching.

The Walk » It’s only 10 steps or so from the
southeast corner of the square to the next stop.

Philadelphia Art Alliance
Housed in a Gilded Age mansion, one
of the few buildings on the square
to escape the skyscraper age, is the
Philadelphia Art Alliance (%216-646-
4302; http://www.philartalliance.org; 261 S 18th St;
adult/child $5/3; h11am-5pm Tue-Fri, from
noon Sat & Sun). Its exhibits of modern
crafts are always interesting.

The Walk » Walk back through the square and
exit on the west side onto Locust St. Turn left on
21st before making a left on Delancey Pl.

Rosenbach Museum & Library
This three-story brick townhouse is an
unassuming repository of treasures and
a bibliophiles dream. The collection
includes 30,000 rare books, drawings
by William Blake, James Joyce’s original
manuscript for Ulysses and a re-creation
of the modernist poet Marianne Moore’s
Greenwich Village apartment.

The Walk » Head east on Delancey Pl for
three blocks, then left on 17th St and then right
on Spruce. The modern Kimmel Center for
the Performing Arts is on the right side of the
intersection at Broad St.

Avenue of the Arts
Tours of Kimmel Center for the
Performing Arts (%215-790-5800; http://www.
kimmelcenter.org; cnr Broad & Spruce Sts),
Philadelphia’s most active center for
fine music, are available at 1pm Tuesday
through Saturday. When walking north
on Broad St (aka ‘the Avenue of the
Arts’), look up. The facades of these
early incarnations of skyscrapers have
signature flourishes like terracotta
roofs and elaborate filigree work
